½ cup butter (no substitutes)
¼ cup butter-flavor shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 egg
2 egg yolks
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sifted powdered sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon butter, melted
¼ teaspoon almond extract
Coarse colored sugar or candy sprinkles

1. Beat butter and shortening with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt beat until combined. Beat in egg, egg yolks, and vanilla until combined. Beat in as much flour as you can with electric mixer; stir in remaining flour with a wooden spoon.
2. Transfer ¾ cup of the dough to a small bowl. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and melted butter. Beat well. Shape into 1-in. balls. Beat almond extract into remaining dough.
3. Mold about 1 tablespoon of the almond flavor dough around each cocoa ball. Roll gently to make a smooth round ball. Roll each ball in colored sugar or candy sprinkles. Place balls 2 in. apart on greased cookie sheets.
4. Bake at 375 for 10 to 11 minutes or until cookies are lightly browned. Cool cookies on pan for 1 minute; transfer to wire racks. Cool completely.
