Twelve large ripe tomatoes
12 large red apples
3 green bell peppers
3 red bell peppers
8 medium onions
1 pint apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. allspice
1/4 cup salt
1 tsp. celery salt
6 cups sugar
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. whole cloves

Peel and chop the tomatoes. Core and quarter the applies, leaving the peel on. Grind in a food processor the apples, peppers, and onions. Mix tomatoes, ground apples, peppers, onions and remaining ingredients. Cook on low heat until thickened, stirring occasionally. Will cook for at least 1 hour. May add jalapeņo pepper to cooking mixture for additional flavor.
Pour into sterilized jars, seal with lids, and process in a hot water bath.

Chili sauce was always on the table at meal times at Grandma's house. When asked about her recipe, she would reply, "I don't have one, I just throw it together." One summer Grandma was visiting us after we moved to Sherman and we got her to help make chili sauce and wrote the recipe down as we went.
