1/2 cup shortening (do not use butter or margarine)
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 1/4 cup flour
1/2 milk (room temperature)
1/2 cup nuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, sugar and add eggs and beat. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk. Add the lemon rind of one or two lemons. Blend only enough to mix. Bake at 350 degrees on the middle shelf of the oven for about an hour or until done. Poke holes with fork into warm loaves and pour mixture of 3/4 cup sugar and the juice of one lemon all over top. Let cake stand 15 minutes or so before removing from pan. Let cool before wrapping.
