"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 1/2 cups white Karo syrup
1 pint whipping cream
Pinch of salt
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
1. In large heavy pan, mix first 4 ingredients. Stir constantly and cook until it forms a medium-firm ball in cold water (about 245º on candy thermometer). This mixture will boil up high in pan, and when it drops down and begins following spoon around pan, you better be testing.

2. Pour into well-greased 8x8-inch square pan. When hardened, turn out onto cutting board. Cut into pieces and wrap each piece in waxed paper (twisted on each end). *Should be cold outside for candy to harden.

She brought some of these to Bertie and Eldon every Christmas, and they're delicious.
