1 c. butter, 1 c. Crisco, 1 c. sugar, 1 c. molasses, 1 tsp.baking soda, dissolved in 1 T. hot water, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1 tsp. nutmeg, 12 tsp. ginger, 1/4 c. finely-ground almonds, 5 c. flour.

Cream butter, Crisco and sugar. Add molasses, baking soda mixture and dry ingredients; flour last. Stir nuts into dough. Work into rolls for slicing. Wrap in waxed paper and let stand overnight in refrigerator. Slice and bake at 350º on greased cookie sheet for 7-8 minutes. Press an almond into the cookie before baking. These cookies can be made in decorated molds, especially for holidays.

These cookies are often served with tea in restaurants. They were traditionally served on St. Nicholas Day in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
