2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup sour milk*
1 tsp. soda'
2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 cup baking chocolate
1 cup hot water

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar & shortening, add eggs. Add soda to sour milk then add to sugar mixture, mixing well. Add sifted dry ingredients, stir together then add hot water. Bake in 9x13 baking dish or two 9" round or square pans at 300° for 1 hour.
You can use electric mixer or stir with a large spoon.

Frost with chocolate frosting of your choice.

*If sour milk not available, add l tsp. vinegar to milk before adding soda.

Line baking dish or pans with paper towel cut to exact size of bottom of pan. After baking let sit about 10 minutes, run knife around side of pan and turn cake out on a serving dish. Do not line pan with paper towel if you do not plan to remove cake from pan before serving or you will have trouble cutting cake to serve.

Grandma Barsotti got this recipe from a neighbor boy when she was about 13 years old and this has been a favorite of the family since that time.
