3/4 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 1/4 cup sifted flour
2 tsp soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cloves

Directions:
Directions:
Mix first 4 ingredients in a large mixing bowl. In a medium bowl sift the dry ingredients together, then mix both sets together. Chill dough for 1 hour or more. Roll into balls, dip in sugar and place on baking sheet. Bake with sugar side up. Sprinkle top of each ball with water before baking. Bake 10-12 minutes at 375º.
