Wash small cucumbers. Make brine of pickling salt and water that will hold up an egg. Soak cucumbers in brine for 3 days. Take out of brine and put in clear water for 3 days. Take our of water and split cucumbers. Put in very weakened vinegar (1qt vinegar to 1 qt water) to taste & add 2 T powdered alum to a dishpan of pickles. Simmer for 2 hours. Do not boil but have it so hot you can hardly stir with your hand. Drain again.

To 1 pint vinegar add 2 qts sugar. Let come to a boil & add 1/2 oz each of stick cinnamon, whole cloves, allspice & pour over pickles. Pour off for 3 mornings, heat and add 1 cup vinegar, 2 cups sugar each morning if necessary.
