Shortening, sugar, eggs, sour or butter milk, molasses, baking soda, flour, cinnamon, powdered ginger.

Mix 1 cup shortening, 1 1/2 cup sugar, 2 eggs, 1 cup sour milk or butter milk, 1 cup molasses, 3 very large cups flour, 3 tsp. cinnamon, 2 tsp. ginger.

Mix in the evening and roll out the next day or drop by spoonfuls and bake. Sprinkle a little sugar on the top before baking, or frost when done and cooled.

Bake at 350º for about 10+ minutes, depending upon how big they are or how soft you want them

This is a treasured recipe that mommy made for us as children. I particularly enjoy the ginger, so some times add a little more than the recipe calls for.I generally find that I need to add at least 4 heaping cups of flour: if you are rolling out the next day for using a cookie cutter, you won't need to add as much flour.

These cookies store very well and make great gingerbread men!
