2/3 c shortening (part butter or margarine)
1/2 c granulated sugar
1/2 c brown sugar (packed)
1 egg
1 t vanilla
1-3/4 c Gold Medal Flour
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
1/2 c chopped nuts (roasted in oven or microwave)
1 c semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375º. Mix shortening, sugars, egg, and vanilla thoroughly. Measure flour by sifting (for a softer rounded Cookie add 1/4 c more flour). Stir dry ingredients together and add to cream mixture. Mix in nuts and chocolate chips. Bake for 8 minutes or until delicately browned (Cookies should still be soft). Cool slightly before removing from the baking sheet,

Chocolate Chip Bars - Make dough for Chocolate Chip Cookies then spread into greased 13x9x2 pan, Bake at 375º oven for 20-25 minutes. Makes about 48 bars.

Surprise Cookies - Make Chocolate Chip Cookies except use 1-1/4 c chocolate-covered raisins or chocolate-covered peanuts in place of chocolate chips.

Chocolate Chip Peppermint Cookies - Make Chocolate Chip Cookies except add 1/2 c crushed peppermint-stick candy.
